The Blood of Agastha

The village of Bramingham was haunted. The people were ghosts who did not know they were dead. Every night, they aimlessly wandered the village streets, trapped between worlds.

Sal, the ghost of a young boy, skipped along clutching his tattered teddy bear. “I’m bored!” he whined to no one. “When will Momma come home?”

An elder ghost sighed sympathetically. “Poor child doesn’t understand.”

Meanwhile, rotting corpses dug themselves out from the graveyard on the edge of town.

These zombies lurched and limped down the winding paths into the village. They craved living flesh but there was none to be found.

Deep in the forest, vampires with pale skin and sharp fangs slept in coffins, waiting for night to fall.

Vlad, the vampire king, turned to his minions. “Tonight we hunt!” he declared. The vampires cheered, thirsty for blood.

Under the old mill by the swamp, the witch Vivian stirred her bubbling cauldron. “Eye of newt, wing of bat,” she cackled, conjuring up an evil potion. She sought to turn townspeople into monsters under her command.

A group of skeletons clacked along the forest floor, searching for their missing bones. “We must be whole!” they rattled. “Only then can we rest!”

All the ghosts, ghouls, and creatures of darkness knew the legend–on Halloween night, they could turn human again by drinking the blood of a pure soul. They desperately hoped the legend was true.

As Halloween approached, the creatures plotted to find this pure soul and drink its precious blood. They began to haunt the neighboring villages, terrifying the townspeople in search of the one who was pure.

One night, a ghoul slipped into a farmer’s home only to be struck down by a mysterious force.

Legend said a pure soul was protected by five angels. Realizing this, the monsters hatched a plan to haunt as many people as possible.

By process of elimination, they would identify the protected one, the owner of the purest soul.

Soon the nearby villages were overrun with monsters. People barricaded themselves in their homes after sundown. Parents comforted crying children, reassuring them the nightmares weren’t real.

But the creatures were real and relentless. They would not stop until they found the purest soul.

Deep in the haunted village, the ghosts held a council. “We grow impatient!” thundered Vlad. “We must identify the pure soul now!” The monsters roared in agreement.

“I have seen signs that the pure soul is a young girl named Agastha,” whispered Vivian. “She lives in the village of Glenbrook.” The creatures’ eyes grew wide with excitement. Finally, a lead!

That night, an army of monsters descended on Glenbrook. They crashed through windows and broke down doors, taking people from their homes. The villagers screamed and fled in terror.

When the creatures reached Agastha’s home, they were blocked by a glowing force field. The five angels had arrived to protect the girl!

But the monsters would not be denied. Together, their dark power overwhelmed the angels. The creatures smashed through the shield and seized young Agastha.

They dragged the crying girl back to their haunted village, through the dead forest, and into the graveyard. There they tied Agastha atop a stone altar.

“Bring me the child!” shouted Vlad. The ghosts brought Agastha forward.

As the full moon rose overhead, the monsters began chanting an ominous spell: “Nos monitor Halloween sanguine hoc pura anima!” Again and again, their unearthly voices repeated the phrase.

Vlad raised a sharp dagger above Agastha. The girl screamed and cried, but it was useless. She was trapped, her protectors defeated.

With a final shout of “Consummatum est!” Vlad plunged the blade into Agastha’s heart. Blood spilled down the stone altar, collecting in a ceremonial goblet.

The monsters surged forward, shoving and fighting for a taste of the precious blood. They dipped rotted fingers into the cup, raised them to their lips, and drank.

Immediately, a change swept over the creatures. Their grotesque and gruesome features melted away, revealing ordinary men and women underneath.

The ghosts became solid. The zombies’ flesh knitted together, healed. The vampires lost their fangs, and the skeletons grew back their missing bones.

Before long, the graveyard was filled with living, breathing people, restored to human form.

“We are free!” they exclaimed in joy and wonder. “The legend was true!”

Then they remembered poor Agastha. The girl’s body lay lifeless on the blood-soaked altar. Sorrow filled their hearts, along with shame.

“What have we done?” murmured Sal, cradling his teddy bear sadly.

At that moment, the five angels appeared. In solemn silence, they lifted Agastha’s body and collected the remaining drops of her blood.

“Though you sought evil, good has come of it,” the angels pronounced. “What is taken can be restored.”

Then they traveled to the villages plagued by the creatures and healed all the people, using the last drops of Agastha’s miraculous blood.

The creatures, now human again, resolved to make amends. They cleaned and rebuilt their village, turning it into a refuge for lost souls. On each Halloween, they lit candles to remember Agastha’s sacrifice.

And though the night was born of darkness, it became a celebration of hope. For even after death, there can be new life.

The End.
